10 Safety Tips for Working at Heights

Working at heights is a dangerous occupation, but it can be done safely. The key to safety is preparation and prevention. Taking the following precautions may ensure your safety when working at heights.

1. Use Railing

Make sure railings and guardrails are strong enough for the work to be done. Make sure all railings and guardrails of appropriate height and strength are used in accordance with their design specifications. Railing is a form of passive protection, the easiest and most recommended way to keep your workers safe while achieving compliance. There’s no training or extra equipment needed because there’s nothing that they need to actually do to keep themselves safe.

2. Select the Proper PPE

Personal Protective Equipment is important when working at heights. Make sure to select the proper equipment for the task, including a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and boots. A full-body harness may also be used, depending on the task. Do your research and determine what you really need. If you have workers welding at heights, you don’t need them to wear a full-body harness, but you might want them to wear safety glasses. Comfort is important, but the main concern has to be the ability to adjust the harness so it fits the user properly, ensuring it works as designed.

3. Inspect Your PPE

Its important that you inspect your PPE before each use. Make sure all of your PPE is in good condition and meets safety standards. It’s also important to know what you’re looking for when carrying out these inspections. When inspecting a harness, pull on the straps to check their strength. Check for cracks and fading, especially on your safety glasses. Replace any equipment that you find is defective or damaged.

4. Select an Acceptable Anchor Point

When working at heights, it’s important to select an anchor point that is strong and capable of supporting the weight of the worker and the equipment being used. Make sure the anchor point is properly rated for the task at hand.

5. Use Ladders Properly

Make sure ladders are securely situated and that they can hold the weight of workers and equipment. Keep your body centered on the ladder while climbing it. Make sure steps fit firmly together to prevent slipping. Also, don’t overload a ladder by placing too much weight on one side or distributing the weight unevenly along its length.

6. Ensure Proper Use of Lifts

When using lifts to work at heights, make sure they are properly inspected and certified for the task. Make sure the lift is of the correct capacity for the workers and equipment being used.

One thing that gets missed quite often is that any person in a boom lift, at any time or height, must be properly tied-off. With scissor lifts, things are a little different. While the site you are working on or the owner of the facility/project may require you to tie-off on a scissor lift, there is no regulatory requirement to do so.

7. Train, Train, Train

Make sure all workers are properly trained in how to work safely at heights. They should be familiar with the hazards associated with the task and know how to safely avoid them. They should also be familiar with the use of personal protective equipment and the proper procedures for using lifts and other equipment.

Enroll them in working at heights courses in order for them to safely work at height. Not only is training required by law, but there is just too much room for error and confusion when it comes to a person trying to protect themselves at height without proper knowledge. Safely working at height requires proper training, focus, and the right safety precautions to be in place.
